Speaker Pelosi Receives Letter from Hundreds of 5th District Residents

Press Release

Date: Sept. 10, 2008
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Jeb Hensarling (TX-05) delivered a letter today from 5th District residents to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Hundreds of East Texans asked Speaker Pelosi to allow a vote on a comprehensive energy bill that would increase the supply of American-made energy and lower the price of fuel at the pump.

Speaker Pelosi adjourned the U.S. House of Representatives for five weeks on August 1 without allowing an up-or-down vote on legislation that would reduce American dependence on foreign sources of oil. Two days later, Hensarling returned to Washington to demand immediate action on legislation that would set America on a path to energy independence.

Hensarling said, "After the Speaker adjourned the House, I spent several days in DC demanding House leadership reconvene and hold a vote on a comprehensive energy plan that would ease East Texans' pain at the pump. After receiving over 1,500 letters from East Texas families suffering due to the high cost I energy, I decided Speaker Pelosi needed to hear directly from these families."

Hensarling returned to East Texas and called upon 5th District residents to sign a letter asking Speaker Pelosi to allow a vote on legislation that would increase the supply of American-made energy. The American Energy Act, portions of which Hensarling co-authored, would allow greater exploration and production of American energy in both arctic Alaska and from our off-shore resources, promote alternative and renewable sources of energy, and encourage energy conservation. Hundreds of residents from cities across the 5th District signed the letter at fuel stations, and many others called Hensarling's office to add their name to the list.

"Speaker Pelosi no longer has to take my word on the fact that Texas families are suffering, she can see for herself," said Hensarling.
